Malcolm Bell, III

Malcolm Bell, III, is professor emeritus of classical archaeology at the University of Virginia. Since 1980 he has been director or co-director (with Carla Antonaccio) of the American Excavations at Morgantina and also serves co-editor (with Christopher Moss) of Morgantina Studies (Princeton University Press), which publish the results of the American investigation of the site in a series of monographs.

Bell has published articles on Morgantina, Hellenistic Sicily, and aspects of Greek painting, sculpture, and architecture, and is the author of Morgantina Studies I, The Terracottas (1981).  At present he is preparing publication of the public buildings of the central and upper agora at Morgantina, as well as (with Alex Walthall and David Reese) a report on stratigraphic excavations in the central agora, which provide evidence for the chronology of Syracusan coinage and for trade and other commercial activity in the early third century BCE. Bell has participated in the successful efforts to recover for the Museo di Morgantina various important works illegally removed from the site and subsequently acquired by international  museums and collectors.
